The wild dog pups - Sept 10

Thanks to our wonderful adoptees, all of our wild dog pups now have names! There’s Purdy, Lilly, Lilah, Alice, Utopia, Nesha, Mogwai, Cali, Magic, Kevala, Boris, Robert, Rudie and Wiko.

Our 14 pups had their first rabies vaccination on 16 August 2010. Wild dogs are particular susceptible to disease so the pups are kept in isolation and it is important that they are vaccinated against certain life threatening diseases.

The pups have also been micro-chipped to make identification easier and we are currently working to secure sponsorship of a micro-chip scanner. Currently the pups are identified through a combination of their collars and different markings. Each pups markings are completely individual, like a finger print.

The pups are munching their way through a lot of food, growing between 800 and 1000 grams per week. They now feed on game and had their first Springbok a couple of weeks ago, which they devoured.

The puppies are getting feistier when Flo has to catch and weigh them. Pietie normally helps Flo and is the one that has to face the snapping jaws!!

This is a very exciting time for N/a’an ku sê as we hope that the pups will grow up to be a strong and healthy part of the Wild dog population in Namibia as part of a new Wild dog breeding and release programme to save this incredible species.
