Kaleb and Liska have been having a ball
this rainy season. Instead of running for shelter like most of the other animals,
these guys have been repeatedly spotted tumbling through the wet grass. You can
hear them from far away chirping away as absolutely love this cool weather.
They are particularly good at making splash puddles.
Lively as ever, these two have been really
enjoying the wide array of meats they are fed. Whether it is beef, donkey
or hartebeest, they are always appreciative of their “choice cuts.” They slurp
up intestines like they are spaghetti and gnaw on the legs for a good mid-day
snack. One day a young calf was found dead and Kaleb and Liska were lucky
enough to be fed the head among other parts. However the two of them are not
the best sharers and spent the whole time fighting over the head, one ear in
each of their mouths, playing tug of war. That game lasted ages with no clear
winner in the end, of course.
After noticing their waterhole emptying
very quickly, the staff and a few volunteers went in to investigate. It turned
out there was a large crack in their waterhole. Wildlife Coordinators Keith, Ollie and Stu set about fixing it. They entered the camp and emptied the waterhole fully, allowing it to dry out for a few days, placing a water trough out for the wild dogs to drink from in the meantime.
They then applied concrete sealant which they left for a few more days to set and dry, before refilling the waterhole. So far so good, the waterhole is not leaking anymore and Kaleb and Liska can go back to
having their midday swims.
