Wild Dog Pups April 2012

Our 13 wild dog pups are really growing up and are now reaching full growth development at 2 years of age.  Their lovely brightly painted coats for which they are known have really flourished and are thick and lustrous. This will definitely come in handy for the upcoming winter. While they have still maintained their youthful friskiness and curiosity, they have really matured physically and socially.

Our beautiful 13 wild dog pups are growing up well and are still all healthy and happy! The females continue being on contraceptives in order to avoid breeding, as this is prohibited by the Namibian Ministry of Environment.

It has been an extremely eventful couple of months for our Wild Dog pups and they have received considerable care to ensure their best welfare.

After a very chilly winter, summer has finally arrived in Namibia. However, as the temperature heats up, the insects have come out to play, causing problems for our wild dogs, Kaleb and Liska.

The Wild Dog puppies continue to get bigger and bigger and are now regularly devouring entire warthogs in a matter of minutes.

As the wild dog puppies grow up we are trying to teach them the more natural habits of hunting, as they would be learning at this stage were they in the wild. 

We therefore recently gave them a special treat/training tool – a whole warthog! As it was too heavy to throw over the fence, the co-ordinators and volunteers went into the enclosure with other meat in order to distract the puppies whilst the warthog was taken in. As soon as the wild dogs saw the warthog their natural instincts kicked in and they circled the warthog carcass and began to feed.

The next day when the volunteers went into the puppies enclosure to clean their waterhole all that was left of the warthog was a clean skull!

Since the leopard walks have stopped here, the co-ordinators have been keen to give the volunteers more time with some of the other animals and included in this is the opportunity to go into Kaleb and Liska's enclosure and spend some time with them. Whilst the volunteers aren't able to touch Kaleb and Liska, they can spend time with them in their enclosure throwing meat for them and taking photographs.
